Why Purim Matters
The Story of Esther: God’s Hidden Hand in Purim
The Book of Esther tells one of Scripture’s most dramatic stories of deliverance—and it’s a story your children need to know. Set in ancient Persia during the Jewish exile, the Purim Bible story reveals how God worked behind the scenes to rescue His covenant people from destruction.
While Purim is not one of the Biblical Feasts mentioned in Leviticus, it is a Messianic Jewish holiday mentioned in the Book of Esther that celebrates God’s miraculous deliverance of the Jewish people from Haman’s plotting.
A Young Jewish Girl Becomes Queen
Esther, a Jewish orphan raised by her uncle Mordecai, conceals her identity when she’s chosen to become Queen of Persia. Her Hebrew name was Hadassah, meaning “myrtle,” but she’s known by her Persian name throughout the palace. When the wicked Haman plots to annihilate all the Jews in the kingdom, Mordecai challenges Esther with words that echo through history: “Who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)
Courage, Fasting, and Divine Reversal
The Biblical Esther story showcases remarkable faith. Before approaching the king uninvited—a move that could cost her life—Esther calls for three days of fasting. Her courage leads to one of Scripture’s most satisfying reversals: Haman is executed on the very gallows he built for Mordecai, and the Jewish people are granted the right to defend themselves.
Teaching the Esther Story to Children
This Printable Purim Coloring and Activity Books for kids is the perfect companion to help children remember the Esther story through hands-on activities. Unlike other Biblical books, God’s name never appears in Esther—yet His fingerprints are everywhere. This makes it perfect for teaching children to recognize God’s hand even when He seems hidden.
The ten chapters of Esther provide rich material for family discussion: Why did Esther fast? How did God turn evil plans into good? What does it mean to be called “for such a time as this”?
“Who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”— Esther 4:14
